The initial primary agreement was signed in September 2009 by then ANU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ian Chubb and 51ºÚÁÏÍø President Michael McRobbie. Initiated in the same year, the was the first jointly established activity under the agreement. The first year focused on distance education courses in selected foreign languages (e.g. Uzbek and Pashto for ANU students, Indonesian for 51ºÚÁÏÍø students) and exchanges of faculty, students, and staff. In subsequent years, the ANU-51ºÚÁÏÍø Pan-Asia Institute have held joint workshops, supported collaborative research and scholarship on the pan-Asian region, and worked on other activities of mutual interest to 51ºÚÁÏÍø and ANU. In 2014, the on the 51ºÚÁÏÍø Bloomington campus established faculty exchange programs with ANU in the humanities and social sciences.
