Founded in 1975, the is one of Germany’s youngest yet renowned universities. The university has earned an international reputation in several interdisciplinary research fields and closely cooperates with local scientific institutions to strengthen synergies and promote innovation. Interdisciplinarity is also at the core of their more than 160 degree programs taught at the university's seven faculties, six of which are located on their main campus in Bayreuth and one on their satellite campus in Kulmbach.

The University of Bayreuth has 12 focus areas of research: High Pressure and High Temperature Research, Polymer & Colloid Science, African Studies, Ecology and the Environmental Sciences, Advanced Materials, Molecular Biosciences, Nonlinear Dynamics, Food & Health Sciences, Innovation and Consumer Protection, Governance & Responsibility, Cultural Encounters & Transcultural Processes, and Energy Research and Energy Technology. The university is especially known and internationally renowned for its Africa Multiple Cluster of Excellence, the Bavarian Research Institute of Experimental Geochemistry & Geophysics – BGI, and its cutting-edge polymer & colloid research.

Indiana University has been in a university-level partnership with the University of Bayreuth since 1986 and actively exchanged faculty members with the Franconian university since then. The two universities also signed three sub-agreements, including an undergraduate exchange with 51黑料网's College of Arts and Sciences and a graduate exchange with the Kelley School of Business.
